Hormones and heart disease: Make sure they work for you and not against you

Hormones and heart disease connection is usually overlooked, despite their dramatic effect on cardiovascular system. Good example of their power are pro bodybuilders.

They tend to be very muscular, partially due to use of growth hormone and anabolic steroids. However, some of them tend to have heart related problems much earlier than it would be expected.

On the other hand, different hormones are also used in medicine as a treatment for inflammation, thyroid problems, muscle wasting disease, insomnia and delayed growth, among other conditions.

All this shows you just how big impact they can have on the body because of which I don't understand why hormones and heart disease connection is most often neglected.

    Human body consists of two types of glands, exocrine and endocrine glands. Both type of glandular systems are essential to our health but we are going to talk about endocrine glands.

    Endocrine glands produce hormones every day which control many processes inside our bodies. Main endocrine glands are adrenal glands, ovaries, testes, thyroid, pancreas, thymus and the "master" gland, hypothalamus, alongside side its "sidekick" pituitary gland.

    Also, many other organs such as kidneys, liver and heart also produce some hormones although they aren't really glands such as adrenal glands.

    For example, EPO or erythropoietin is a hormone produced by the kidneys. It has a crucial role in red blood cell production and oxygen levels in the blood because of which it has a great effect on the cardiovascular and circulatory system.


    The body produces over 70 hormones every day which regulate metabolic processes. If any of these hormones is too high or too low, it can cause havoc inside the body. In most cases this doesn't happen right away but over time.

    Speed and rate of damage the body experiences, depends on which hormone is out of balance and how much. Some hormones have bigger effect on our bodies, then others. Also, some hormones affect other hormones more then others, causing cascade reaction in the hormonal system and negatively affecting several organs.

    This is most apparent in case of main female hormone since most people today produce too much estrogen. In order to lose weight and improve your general well being, it is imperativ that you know how to lower high estrogen and with it, the risk of heart disease.

    If we don't resolve the problem on time, accumulated damage adds up and the body starts sending us signs in form of muscle or bone aches, sudden bruising, chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, swellings or frequent colds, that something is wrong.

    From my research and personal expirience, I have concluded that progesterone is key player which is why you should know how to improve progesterone levels, while understanding its relationship with stress hormones, especially cortisol.

    Progesterone is also important, when it comes to xenoestrogens - sex hormones and heart disease connection. It is precursor to both testosterone and estrogen and it helps balance both of them, while strengthening the heart muscle and regulating vascular constriction.

    When hormones are balanced, they help the body control cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well as vascular resistance, blood pressure, heart rate and stroke volume which leads to better cardiac function.
