Diabetes herbs and supplements

Diabetes herbs and supplements can be of great help, when it comes to dealing with this kind of metabolic disorder. Despite its great impact on persons life, diabetes is very well understood and manageable disease.

Unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise and being overweight are the main causes of the disease, besides genetics. Consequences of diabetes can even reflect negatively on the cardiovascular system, among other.

Before mentioning diabetes herbs and supplements, I must say that the diet and especially fiber and complex carbohydrates are the most important factors in managing and avoiding the disease.

Stay away from simple refined carbs such as white bread, white flour and sugar as well as fatty foods, as much as possible.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is one of diabetes herbs used in cooking which makes it easy to include it into your daily meals.

Studies have shown that it lowers blood sugar levels, increases natural production of insulin, improves pancreas function and insulin sensitivity. A lot of these benefits is due to cinnulin which is one of the ingredients in cinnamon.

Cinnamon can also reduce cholesterol and inflammation, fight viruses and bacterias, improve digestion and brain function. Some people even use it to relieve headache and migraine pain.

Cinnamon side effect may include kidney and liver damage when high dosage is consumed since the herb contains coumarin which can be  toxic in high concentrations.

Lucky for us, low dose is all we need to get its benefits. Cinnamon costs only a few bucks which is damn good bargain when it comes to your health.

VITAMIN D

It has been shown that people who live in area with plenty of sun as well as those who take vitamin D supplements had lower risk of diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes.

Scientist belive that vitamin D has active role in regulating pancreatic beta cells thereby preventing autoimmune rection toward  insulin producing - beta cells of the pancreas.

GYMNEMA SILVESTRE

Gymnema Sylvestre is one of the most promoted diabetes herbs. According to scientific research, it stimulates insulin secretion, by regenerating insuling producing beta cells of the pancreas.

It also prevents adrenal hormones from stimulating the liver's production of glucose which reduces blood sugar levels.

Thanks to gymnemic acid, the herb also prevents sugar craving which is another helpful quality in managing diabetes. With so many upsides, it is no wonder why it is so popular among people coping with diabetes.

ADAPTOGENS

Adaptogens are class of herbs that nourish the glandular system. As such, these diabetes herbs also improve the function of pancreas which is a gland that produces insulin.

There are several adaptogens but some of them have been shown more effective than others, when it comes to diabetes. This includes american ginseng, panax ginseng, ashwagandha and eluthero.

BLUEBERRY, BILBERRY, CRANBERRY AND OTHER BERRIES

Berries are very rich in various antioxidants and phytochemicals but each of them has its own unique compound. The more colorful berries are, the higher is their ORAC value.

Berries with high ORAC value help prevent damage to the tissue, including the pancreas, by neutralizing free radicals, modulating immune system function and reducing excess blood sugar levels.

FENUGREEK

Fenugreek seeds contain 4-hydroxyisoleucine, which is type of amino acid. Several animal and human studies have found that fenugreek seed extract with 4-hydroxyisoleucine has positive effect on healthy insulin secretion and glucose control.

The higher blood sugar level, the more effective herb is in restoring normal blood glucose levels.

OTHER DIABETES HERBS AND SUPPLEMENTS

Banaba (contains corosolic acid), Ginkgo Biloba, Bitter Melon, Chromium, Magnesium, Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Indian Kino, Onion and Garlic have shown positive effects on blood sugar levels to those suffering from diabetes.

Each of this herbs has its unique chemical compounds that in one way or another can be helpful in managing and in some cases treating the disease.

CONCLUSION

Eat healthy and exercise regulary to manage diabetes. After these two you can think about adding some herbs to your diet.

Several of these diabetes herbs can also be helpful in treating heart disease thereby having triple effect.

Since heart muscle and the brain are high energy demanding organs, weak pancreas function, insulin insensitivity and unbalanced blood sugar levels can have destructive effect on these two.

Over time, diabetes can lead to dementia, stroke, heart attack, weakening of the heart function and atherosclerosis.
